To compensate for the urgent need for 24/7 access to emergency shelter, beds, showers, toilets, storage, telephones, life skills, job training/placement, the availability of service assessment as well as transitional and permanent housing, Living Unity, Inc will first establish a 24-Hour assessment service center/transitional housing facility called the Unity House. The Unity House will provide homeless brothers/sisters who are experiencing homelessness a clean and safe place to rest and receive multiple services to assist them in regaining their self confidence and motivate them to re-establish a productive life. The Unity House will provide food, clothing, shelter and supportive services to those brothers/sisters experiencing homelessness including those suffering from mental illness, addictive diseases, and/or from multiple diagnoses. The Unity House will provide an adequate place for Living Unity to take willing persons desiring change to be implemented into Living Unity's Change & Transformation Continuum of Care Ministry. The Unity House will assist law enforcement officials by functioning as an alternative to incarcerating homeless brothers/sisters who are addicted to substances or "at risk" of committing city ordinance violations. At the Unity House, (2) two paths of service are provided: "humane services" and "therapeutic services." The "humane services" provided at the Unity House will provide the incentive to the homeless brothers/sisters to come in from the elements of the streets and rest, provided food, water and clothing, a place to have their needs assessed and accommodated, access to beds, showers and toiletries, short- term storage lockers, telephones, and referrals for assistance and case management. The "therapeutic services" provided at The Unity House will focus upon the critical services necessary to stabilize the homeless brothers/sisters and assist them in moving toward a state of self- sufficiency. These therapeutic services will include mental, physical and spiritual mental health care assessments, drug screening, addiction pretreatment, mentoring, one on one counseling and support groups, case management, job training and placement, housing placement, as well as referrals/linkages to other supportive services.
Living Unity Inc.'s Change and Transformation Ministry Living Unity Inc.'s Change and Transformation Ministry is a three (3) step Continuum of Care program which provides humane and therapeutic services, and is commissioned with the task of helpingAtlanta's homeless brothers and sisters help themselves. A continuum of care system is designed to address the critical problem of what the federal and local governments call chronic homelessness, through a coordinated community-based process of identifying needs and building a system to address those needs. The approach is predicated on the understanding that homelessness is not caused merely by a lack of food and shelter, but involves a variety of underlying, unmet needs - physical, emotional, mental, economic, and social. Through our three (3) step continuum of care system, Living Unity, Inc. will concentrate and address all five (5) of the listed aspects of homelessness (physical, emotional, mental, economic, and social) in order to transform the consciousness (thinking) of the homeless brother and sister and, through patience, persistence and compassion, groom the brother and/or sister into a member, employee and eventual tenant of Living Unity, Inc. Step One: Establishing an emergency shelter/assessment facility The first step in Living Unity, Inc.'s Change and Transformation Continuum of Care Ministry is the 24/7 emergency shelter/assessment facility called the Unity House. The Unity House will provide food and clothing, a place to wash and dry cloths, a comfortable clean place to sleep, as well as where other social services will be offered to brothers and sisters who experience are homelessness so that an assessment can be made on the needs of each individual. The Unity House will provide a bed for a total of 250 men and 50 beds reserved for women. Brother and sisters from the streets will also be provided with the proper necessities for proper hygiene to bathe and freshen up within the Unity House as well. Food served from the Unity House will be provided mainly through our membership with The Atlanta Food Bank and business willing to donate. The clothing in which the Unity House will distribute to the homeless brother/sister will be acquired through personal donations of clothing and corporate sponsorships from clothing companies willing to participate in this ministry. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and three (3) snacks will be offered throughout the course of any given day. For an individual to be able to eat at the Unity House, a brother or sister need only to be hungry and without means to provide for self. The Unity House will focus upon the critical services necessary to stabilize the each homeless brother and sister in order to properly assist them in moving toward a state of self- sufficiency. Services will include mental, physical and spiritual health assessments, medical and mental health care, drug screening, addiction pretreatment, mentoring, counseling and support groups, case management, job training and placement, housing placement, as well as referrals/linkages to other supportive services. Also inside the Unity House, a library will be housed where homeless brothers and sisters not only will be able to continue to educate themselves through reading, but will also be able to obtain assistance in obtaining their G.E.D, degrees, and job training/placement if they so desire. Enlightening group lectures and inspirational messages will be given throughout any given day by the shelter Executive Director/Facilitator and Pastor/CEO of Living Unity, Inc. Rodney Wilson II Mpsy.D as well as other various professional and volunteer counselors/mentors speaking and being available to be spoken to throughout any given day. Experienced substance abuse counselors/mentors will also be on site to speak with at The Unity House for those who desire it. The key intention and purpose of Living Unity, Inc's Unity House is to get homeless brothers/sisters off and away from the street environment and surroundings and into a controlled understanding environment so that the recipients may experience a new revitalized way of thinking, improved behavior, and thus rewarding actions, therefore allowing true change & transformation the opportunity to be implemented. Step Two : Membership Volunteer Program/Transitional Housing; Becoming a member of Living Unity, Inc For those brothers and sisters who frequent the Unity House and are seeking serious change in their lives, they will be given the opportunity to become a member of Living Unity, Inc., and officially enlisted into the Change & Transformation Continuum of Care Ministry membership volunteer program and transitional housing, the second step in the Change & Transformation Continuum of Care Ministry. Before an individual proceeds to step two (2) which is being enlisted into our membership volunteer program and provided a room in the transitional housing section of the Unity House, a contract will be provided, reviewed and signed by the homeless brother/sister and the Executive Director to ensure that both parties adhere to their respective obligations and duties. After the contract has been reviewed and signed, each individual will continue to have weekly counseling meetings with the Executive Director, Dr. Rodney Wilson II, Mpsy.D, so that each individual may be given the opportunity to express what they are experiencing in their lives as well as at the Unity House. The individual then will be provided single bed dorm room and through the membership volunteer service will be responsible for daily tasks assigned by Living Unity. There will be a total of 25 single bed dorm rooms reserved for men and 15 single bed dorm rooms reserved for women on the transitional housing wing of the Unity House. A more intimate and psychological focus is developed between the homeless brother/sister and Living Unity, Inc at this step, through extensive case management, group and individual counseling sessions called Soul Therapy, as well as job training, and preparations. We begin to delve into each others psyche and learn about us, individually as well as collectively, to (re)discover our true passions and purposes by revisiting past hurts and disappointments so that they can be dealt with and healed so that the individual can begin to focus and shape their present and future circumstances. This step is where the initial grooming of the brother/sister into occupying permanent housing and becoming an employee of Living Unity, Inc begins, and the members will play an active role as mentors and role models for the other men and women through our outreach services and within the Unity House, all while continuing to make the necessary changes within their own lives. Continued assistance will still be available to brothers and sisters in acquiring their G.E.D., degrees, job preparation and training and other social services at this step as well. Step Three : Permanent Housing and Employment with Living Unity, Inc. Step three is considered the ending and the beginning for the brother/sister in Living Unity, Inc.'s Change & Transformation Continuum of Care Ministry. The ending because it is the final step of the three (3) step rehabilitation process, yet the beginning of their renewed life and partnership as a family member/employee/tenant of Living Unity, Inc. At this step, the family member now has been mentally, emotionally, physically, and most importantly, spiritually rehabilitated. The individual now will be matched to job opportunities within and provided by Living Unity, Inc according to their specific skill set, desire and passion. As employees of Living Unity, Inc, the brother/sister will be moved from the transitional housing section of the Unity House and relocated into houses owned by Living Unity, Inc. The individual will now be an employee as well as tenant of Living Unity, Inc. At this final stage, the individual will have been rehabilitated into a reformed way of thinking about their self, received counseling/life coaching and financial debt management counseling, acquired job preparation and placement, as well as, has been provided proper living facilities to order to reestablish standard living responsibilities such as paying rent or mortgage and utilities which will be deducted directly from wages by being employed by Living Unity. Living Unity will continue to work with the member/employee/tenant in establishing effective money management skills as well as fixing and establishing proper credit. The intent of Living Unity, Inc establishing this continuum of care via our Change & Transformation Ministry is to provide a lasting positive change within the individual's thoughts, behavior, and actions as well as to establish a permanent relationship between the individual and Living Unity. |
